The seat of the wheelchair is printed in two materials – a translucent resin and a thermoplastic polyurethane plastic (TPU) that provides shock absorption, and a titanium pedal for the foot pedal. “Through the Go wheelchair, we saw an opportunity to really improve the mobility of people with disabilities. We can use 3D printing technology to solve some significant and meaningful problems,†Hubert said. He changed his studio to Layer last year to focus more on those "people-oriented" projects. Designers say that during the development process, the wheelchair users who participated in the project were most concerned about the strength of the wheelchair and the difficulty of self-propulsion – especially on wet ground. In response to this, Layer used lightweight carbon fiber for the spokes of the wheelchair wheel and developed a wheel surface that could be locked into a custom glove.
