“Bridges, airplanes and nuclear power plants, all of which are materials that we must check frequently to ensure that we can run these systems safely with minimal risk, so we want to figure out how to use 3D printing technology to help meet this. Demand," Adams said.

Doctoral candidate Cole Brewbaker hopes to change the material by introducing nanoparticles.

"Very very small, if you take your hair off the head, look at the diameter, and divide it into 10,000 times, then this is the nanoscale range," Brewbaker said.

By introducing these nanoparticles into conventional materials such as plastics, they become "smart." The inspector can simply see if the material is damaged by the use of black light.

“If the material produces some damage, we can basically see the damage by looking at the material, so the material is intelligent because it reports its own health,” Adams said.

Checking airplanes and bridges and other large structures can be tedious or even dangerous work. Researchers hope that this technology will ensure people's safety and make the process faster and cheaper.
