A few years ago, the substrates for digital imaging were paper and vinyl, and no other substrates could be used for digital imaging. However, with the advent of platform machines, the use of UV-curable inks and solvent inks has greatly expanded the range of substrates that can be digitally imaged.

At present, the most common printing materials for digital imaging are paper-based materials for signage and point-of-sale advertising. Ethylene is used to make many finished products. Self-adhesive vinyl is used for decals or graphic production. Pictures such as those attached to buses or other vehicles are such applications. Thick vinyl can be used to make flags and electrostatic adsorption decals.

Some digital presses can print directly on textiles ranging from thick canvas to thin silk. The final products for digital textile printing include graphic printing on buildings, trade show advertisements, clothing and ties.
