Dutch college students develop 3D printed stainless steel bicycles

For friends, 3D printing bicycles may not be so fresh, because Tiangong has reported a variety of 3D printing bicycles, plastic and metal. But the 3D printed bike created by a group of students at the University of Delft in the Netherlands (TU Delft) is different because they first created a stainless steel bike using an arc-based 3D printing technology .

However, this bicycle was not completed by the students themselves, but was helped by MX3D. The friend of MX3D, a company that may have an impression, is the company that is printing a steel pedestrian bridge on the canal in Amsterdam. The company developed a Mataerial 3D printer in 2013. Unlike the usual 3D printers, Mataerial uses a robotic arm to control the extrusion of the resin from the printhead.

Later, MX3D developed a printable metal Mataerial 3D printer in combination with arc welding technology. The technology primarily melts the metal at high temperatures generated by the arc, "dropping" the molten metal to a designated location to create a 3D object. The technology also uses robotic arms to control the location of molten metal droplet deposition, forming a variety of complex structures, and can produce considerable structures without the need for supporting materials.

This technology is currently used in the 3D printed steel pedestrian bridge that MX3D is building. The company's stainless steel bicycle with 3D printing in cooperation with TU Delft further demonstrates the potential of this technology in another aspect. The bicycle frame is actually printed separately into several main parts and then welded together by hand.

The finished 3D printed bike was named the Arc Bicycle by the production team and weighed almost like a traditional steel bike. It was fully capable of riding on bumpy cobblestone streets.

“For us, it’s important to design a functional object that people can use in their daily lives,” says production team member Stef de Groot. “As a Dutch student, we naturally think of bicycles. The bike rack is A good tool for testing this technology because it involves complex forces."
