IAAC demonstrates 3D printing construction method for on-site robot assisted by drones

<

In May of this year, the 20th Barcelona International Building Materials Exhibition (BarcelonaBuildingConstrumat) was held as scheduled. At this four-day event, the Catalonia Institute of Advanced Architecture (IAAC) was probably the busiest organization because it produced 3D clay structures on site, including a large pavilion. Previously, IAAC had demonstrated its own Pylos 3D printing technology , groundbreaking 3D printed concrete bridges and so on.

This time, IAAC's goal is to showcase its On Site Robotics project. The project uses large cable-driven robots to print large structures directly at the construction site. These robots are similar to robots that record football games, and the cables that connect them provide a lot of freedom of movement, which means they can easily print unusually large structures. Robots are easy to install, can be built quickly and efficiently, and have low maintenance costs. For more than a decade, IAAC has been developing this technology.

These construction robots are assisted by drones developed by Noumena. The drone hovers over the construction site and uses a special camera to obtain thermal information from the 3D printed object to monitor the drying speed of the structure.

"3D printer cable driven robots and unmanned aerial vehicles to test natural material, if not calcined clay, sustainable geopolymer, even recycled compounds made from municipal waste paved the way, so the construction process becomes more Fast, cheaper and more sustainable," IAAC explained.

Another benefit of this on-site construction method is that the 3D printing robot provides design freedom. This freedom was evident in the pavilion that IAAC printed for the show. The pavilion consists of several pillars with diamond patterns and a wall with slopes. The pillars are printed in undyed clay 3D and look like trees, giving the entire structure a natural look. At the same time, visitors can clearly see that the design of the pavilion is very refined.

“The flexibility of on-site construction coupled with the power of 3D printing technology can help create new architectural designs that are increasingly complex, use less and less material, and can be deposited directly where needed,” says IAAC.

The structure built by the IAAC system is very beautiful, but the goal of the IAAC is not just art buildings. I have not heard of any place where there is no shortage of housing. For underdeveloped areas, the ability of on-site robots to quickly and efficiently 3D print powerful and stable buildings can be very useful for housing construction, especially since the technology does not require expensive materials and can use locally stocked materials.
