SWOP: generation and delivery of electronic files

<

As the exchange of electronic files has become a major trend in the industry, the requirements for electronic file formats have become very important; at the same time, it is required that these files should also contain the data required in the SWOP parameter description, which is ultimately used for film and printing plates. . The purpose is to mix the images in the electronic file and the pictures in the film into the same printable format.

However, in order to achieve the above goals when dealing with digital files, many guidelines must be followed.

General needs

Unless remote proofing technology can be fully controlled and widely used, all electronic files must be equipped with SWOP proofs (digital proofing or analog proofing) approved by the customer.

The digital color scale should not be directly included in the image area. During the transfer of all jobs, a digital control object must be included in the file, but outside the real image area. The object should contain color patches for all printed primary colors with tonal values of 5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 95%, specifically for verifying the accuracy of the data transfer and / or interpretation process.

The transmission method (eg tape, removable disk, electronic transmission) and file format adopted when exchanging electronic files must be approved and approved by all participating departments.

Electronic documents must be accompanied by electronic or hard copy work subpoenas. For the transmission of commercial materials such as order inserts, reservations, and copy descriptions, refer to the publisher / agent information exchange GCA parameter description (SPACE) and DDAP e-commerce information exchange parameter description (DDAP DEBIES).

The file also contains all SWOP-specified file preparation and final film logic parameters (such as UCR / GCR, gray balance, cross rule lines, image overprint, etc.). Multiple insertion orders often require multiple file setting methods. Check the above parameters with the publisher.

SWOP recognizes the requirements of the DDAP user demand parameter description (version 3.2 in 1995) for editing all content. When changes are required, they must be changed in accordance with the requirements of advertising agencies and advertisers with the permission of publishers and printing staff.

standard format

For predictable proofing, imposition and output, the final prepress file should be saved as a CMYK raster file, using the TIFF / IT (labeled image file format using image technology) file format exchange defined by ISO12639. The final page (that is, Final Page (referred to as FP), continuous tone (that is, Continuous-Tone, referred to as CT), and line draft (that is, Line Work, referred to as LW) files can all be saved in TIFF format. Sometimes high-resolution continuous tone images (ie High-Resolution Contone, HC for short) are encountered.

SWOP currently supports file exchange using standard file formats developed by the CGATS and ISO TC 130 committees. As the standards committee continues to identify new file formats, these new formats will also become SWOP evaluations and consider standards. Currently, the ANSI TIFF / IT P1 format is the only format recommended by the DDAP committee related to SWOP.

Other formats

If other file formats must be exchanged, GCA electronic mechanical specifications (ie Electronic Mechanical Specification, EMS for short) (Second Edition) 118-1993 can be used with the agreement of all participants. This file provides particularly useful guidance when using a private desktop application or a local color electronic prepress system (CEPS) and including other file formats (for example, EPS, PICT, or PDF file formats) policy. Unlike EMS, the electronic files allowed by SWOP must be screened.

Data compression can only be used if both the sender and receiver agree to use compressed files and use the same compression method. The sender must ensure that the publisher and / or printing personnel understand the compression method used and have a way to decompress the file. Lossless compression must be used: a compression method without data changes.
